Accountant I/II - Financial Reporting (Administrative)



Summary of Job Responsibilities

This position is responsible for accounting and reporting for Colorado PERA's defined contribution and deferred compensation trust funds, budget accounting, and assisting with cost allocation and reporting processes. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: review and analysis of investment manager, record-keeper and custodial bank reporting, research discrepancies, communicate with internal and external parties, document and prepare general ledger journal entries and financial reports, reconcile accounts, prepare budget entries, and assist with cost allocation and reporting processes. The individual works under the guidance and direction of senior level accounting staff, the financial reporting assistant manager, and the financial reporting manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Employees are held accountable for all duties of the job. Individuals must be able to perform these duties with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Perform account analysis and reconcile account balances.

  • Verify data and prepare general ledger journal entries.

  • Validate accuracy of work prior to submission for review.

  • Prepare journal entries for budget requests and revisions.

  • Assist budget managers with budget reports and inquiries.

  • Audit transactions, identify errors, research and reconcile discrepancies.

  • Communicate with custodial bank, recordkeeper, investment managers, and internal parties to resolve discrepancies.

  • Assist with cosmetic review of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.

  • Report unresolved issues to management.

  • Create and maintain Excel spreadsheet files.

  • Cross-train and support other accounting functions.

  • Participate in training and educational opportunities for professional development.

  • Maintain regular and prompt attendance.

  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.

  • General ledger accounting and/or auditing experience.

  • Understanding of financial accounting standards and principles.

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and work effectively in a team environment.

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to validate the accuracy of work prior to review.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Scope and Complexity of Work

Supports defined contribution and deferred compensation trust fund accounting under supervision. Follows detailed procedures and seeks guidance for complex issues.

Independently manages defined contribution and deferred compensation trust fund accounting. Applies professional judgment and recommends process improvements.

Experience

1–2 years of general ledger accounting or auditing experience preferred.

3+ years of general ledger accounting or auditing experience required. Experience with public pension, government, or investment accounting preferred.

Independence & Leadership

Works under close supervision. Seeks frequent feedback and participates in team meetings to gain knowledge.

Works with minimal supervision. Manages multiple priorities and deadlines. Leads projects and contributes to division efficiency.

Technical Proficiency

Basic understanding of financial accounting standards. Intermediate Excel skills preferred.

Intermediate to advanced understanding of financial accounting standards. Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting software (e.g., PeopleSoft Financials, nVision) preferred.

Communication & Collaboration

Communicates effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Collaborates across departments.

Explains complex financial information clearly. Coordinates with external auditors and leads cross-functional collaboration.

Certifications (Preferred)

None required; CPA or other certifications may be beneficial.

CPA or other relevant certifications preferred but not required.

Work Environment & Expectations

Hybrid work option: up to 2 days/week remote. Expected to maintain professional demeanor and meet deadlines.
