Geophysicist/Geologist/Marine Surveyor (Entry-Level) (Finance)

Tetra Tech is adding a full-time Geophysicist/Geologist/Marine Surveyor (Entry-Level) to join our growing Marine Services team in the Pacific Northwest. This position is based out of our Bothell, WA office.

Our Marine Services team specializes in the acquisition of bathymetric, topographic, geophysical, and oceanographic data, along with environmental sampling across the United States and internationally. We work on inland lakes, rivers, ports, harbors, and coastal and offshore sites, supporting a range of public, governmental, and private clients. Our geophysics group is known for using cutting-edge technology in marine magnetic and electromagnetic surveying for identifying near-surface targets, such as unexploded ordnance (UXO) and infrastructure (cables, pipelines), as well as performing hydrographic surveys and subsurface feature assessments.

Your Role:

  • Assist with and perform geophysical and hydrographic survey planning, data collection, and data analysis.
  • Work alongside a multidisciplinary team of geoscientists and hydrographers to complete complex marine and terrestrial geophysical projects.
  • Utilize geophysical methods including single and multibeam echosounder (SBE/MBE), SSS, Magnetometer, TDEMI, GPR, sub-bottom profiling (SBP), seismic reflection/refraction, and laser scanning for underwater and subsurface environmental and engineering applications.
  • Conduct and support various types of sediment and biological sampling including vibracoring and piston coring as well as drilling efforts.
  • Setup, operate and troubleshoot surveying system hardware, computers, software, and cabling.
  • Setup, operate HYPACK, HYSWEEP, QINSy, POSPac at competent to expert level.
  • Setup, operate Leica / Trimble static GNSS and RTK GPS and process and perform QC on the data.
  • Setup, operate R2Sonic 2020/2026 multibeam sonar (MBES) at a competent to expert level.
  • Collect and process multibeam and/or single beam echosounder data with CARIS, Qimera, Hypack.
  • Work aboard boats from 10-250 feet in length, domestically and internationally.
  • Perform field topographic, scientific or engineering surveys using GPS and/or Total Station.
  • Understand geodesy, survey and tidal datum, establish and recover survey control.
  • Develop and follow plans, specifications, SOPs, procedures and promote safe work practices.
  • Be self-motivated, responsible, hardworking, ethical, trustworthy and dependable.
  • Have strong analytical and communication skills and strong desire to learn and do new things.
  • Be able to work both independently and as part of a diverse team.
  • Travel for domestic and foreign work, ~50+% of the year, assignments is required.
  • Ability to work in the field in inclement weather as well as offshore for weeks at a time is required.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geophysics, Geology, Engineering Geology, or a related field.
  • 1-5+ years of relevant experience, with knowledge of marine and terrestrial geophysics and/or hydrography.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with geophysical/technical software such as Geosoft Oasis Montaj, HyPack/Hysweep, CARIS HIPS/SIPS, Matlab, ArcGIS, and related tools.
  • Willingness to travel for domestic and international work assignments.
  • Ability to work in the field, including offshore assignments on vessels, and perform physical tasks (lifting 50 lbs).
  • Strong research, analytical, organizational, and communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong attention to detail and the capacity to stay focused and positive during long field operations.
  • Safety-conscious mindset with the ability to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Desirable Experience and Certifications:

  • Experience with geodesy, cartography, CAD/GIS, photogrammetry and chart production is desired.
  • Experience working on small boats and large vessels desired but not required.
  • Experience working in a consulting, multi-client, fast-paced environment, with changes in daily activities is highly desirable.
  • Experience with POS-MV, SBG Equinox, SBP, SSS, USBL, LiDAR, ADCP, ROVs is beneficial.
  • Experience with sediment samplers and corers, vibrocorers, water samplers, trawls and/or drilling is desired.
  • Competency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Surfer, or ArcGIS is desired.
  • OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) 40 Hr. certification
  • BOSIET and/or STCW Safety training for at sea emergencies. (Fire, First-Aid, survival at seal)
  • First-Aid / CPR (First Responder)
  • UAS Remote Pilot (Part 107), Recreational RC electronics, Ardupilot, MavLink, Arduboat, ROS
  • TWIC, Merchant Mariners Credential, USGC OUPV, USCG 100T Master, State Boating Card

Compensation :

Pay commensurate with experience.

Pay Range: $31.25 - $40.87/hr.

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the above role; skills, certifications, and competencies that align to the specified role; geographic location; and education, as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
